Much like humans, our furry friends can catch viruses that leave them feeling poorly. One of these diseases is known as canine influenza, which primarily affects the respiratory tract.
The canine influenza virus was first reported in dogs in the United States in 2004 and has since been reported in isolated outbreaks in 46 states. Vaccines are the best way to protect your pets from illnesses.
What is Canine Influenza?
Canine influenza, or dog flu, is a highly contagious disease that is transmitted through respiratory secretions such as coughing, sneezing, licking, and barking. The virus can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, which means your dog can also catch it by sharing food bowls, leashes, blankets, and more.
The virus can live on clothing for 24 hours and on human hands for 12 hours, so people can also carry the virus from infected dogs to uninfected dogs.
Canine influenza is rarely fatal, but it can cause discomfort for your pet. Symptoms will occur 2 or 3 days after exposure, such as:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Nasal or ocular discharge
- Lethargy
- Decrease in appetite
- Fever
Pets with weaker immune systems, such as puppies, geriatric dogs, or those with a complicated medical history, are at a greater risk for more severe symptoms.
How Does the Canine Influenza Vaccine Work?
Like all vaccines, the canine influenza vaccine contains an inactive virus. This introduces the disease to the body without causing infection.
Think of this introduction as a practice run for the immune system. The body will develop antibodies to fight against the virus. So if your dog is ever exposed to it, he will have a better chance of fighting it off.
The vaccine also contains adjuvants that help boost the immune response.
No vaccine is 100% effective. However, it helps to reduce the chance of infection, as well as the duration and severity of the disease.
Does My Dog Need The Canine Influenza Vaccine?
The Canine Influenza Vaccine is a non-core vaccine, which means it is not legally required. However, some businesses and facilities will require proof of the vaccine for entry. This requirement is in place to protect every pup at the location, including those with compromised immune systems.
Dogs that frequently interact with others are at a higher risk for infection. If your pup travels with you, competes in shows or races, stays at doggy daycare or other boarding facilities, or often visits the dog park, the vaccine is highly recommended.
Your vet will let you know the appropriate vaccine schedule based on the specific brand offered.
